Raising Our Girls: Let's Talk about Self-Esteem

I have shared my passion about this subject previously in this post, and was overwhelmed by the support it received. The Let's Talk Campaign and what it stands for couldn't be more timely.

As most of you know, my oldest daughter, Isabella, started high school this year; typically a time when your own self-esteem and values are tested time and again. With the likes of television and social media bombarding our girls {and women, let's be honest} with images of near perfection, what can we as mothers do to ensure our girls realize the difference between airbrushing and reality? It all starts with CONVERSATION.

I always wanted a baby girl. Don't all mother's even if we never acknowledge this out loud? Someone in our own likeness. Someone to dress up and do girly things with.
I don't think I ever remember worrying about having to have difficult conversations with that same baby girl. Or worrying about choices she would make eventually and how those would affect her.
Parenting is funny like that. Everything is a phase and whatever phase your child is in currently seems to be all-consuming. That is, until the next phase moves in.
The issue of self-esteem, confidence and body image isn't one that just moves on.
It stays with you. Always.
It is our job as mother's of girl's, critical really, to ensure the lines of communication are open and that dialogue is ongoing.
If you are not sure where to begin, start with downloading the simple "let's talk" toolkit here. It's an amazing resource for everyone, even those who may feel that they're on the right track with the girl or girls in their lives.

I know I tell my oldest she is beautiful all the time. But more importantly, I also tell her she is SMART. And KIND. And a GOOD FRIEND.

The best kind.
Because she is.
And it's my job to make sure she knows it.
I want to see this girl grow up to be a smart, confident woman. A woman who is strong-willed and loving. And beautiful, inside and out.

And then, share the story of your own experience on their self-esteem wall
I spent some time reading through other mama's stories this weekend and it's great to see women encouraging each other and their girls.
Girls helping girls.

Update Fall : Jewels

Ahhh, fall.
You are finally "officially" upon us.
See my picks for fashion updates here and beauty updates here.
Now, onto the jewelry drawer{s}:

Fallin' for Jewels
1. Yes, I really do want a Dannijo collar necklace, alas, it is not in the budget. So, I did what any resourceful gal would do...I ordered this one.

2. A new heart shaped pendant necklace. I have a fondness for heart anything and have been trying to replace one for a while now. I love the David Yurman collection {scary similar crafting imo} as well as this one by Swarovski. I won't buy heart-shaped anything for myself so dear husband, if you are reading, I really like this. A lot.

3. A skull something. I've been eyeing a pretty skull wrap bracelet at Bauble Bar for a while, but now, I have my eyes set on this bangle in rose gold. Dainty but kinda dangerous. Love.
And it would go perfectly with the new rose gold watch I'm planning hoping to get.

4. An updated for fall, darker hued pair of crystal studs. I have a lighter bronze pair that go with everything. As will these

5. A statement cuff. This one is by UnEarthed via etsy and comes in a multitude of colors and metals. Any of their pieces would do but I especially love this one in this season's "it" color. This shop is definitely worth a peek.

6. I already own both a sterling silver Pandora bracelet and an off-white leather one that I wear daily but would love to update it for fall with a few of these fabulous garnet colored murano glass beads. Why not make it seasonal? And while I'm at it, would love to add a dark hued leather wrap bracelet to my collection.

7. A rose gold watch. I wasn't sure whether I was in love or not so much with this metal. I think I'm in love. Particularly with this Michael Kors watch that has just the right amount of bling without being too over the top.

8. A good quality, {read: gold} pair of classic earrings. These gucci horse bit design earrings would be an incredible addition and would be for years to come.

9. And lastly, a statement cocktail ring. Another piece I have been fighting mainly because I have young children and fear taking an eye out. I would save this tanzanite beauty for date night. Or girls night. Whichever.
I am loving this stone. Sometimes purple, sometimes blue. So pretty.

Do you change up your jewels come the cooler weather?

Ava's Favourite Things

Play is the work of children. It's very serious stuff. - Bob Keeshan

It is almost as though a light goes off. At some point, Ava discovered that she could actually play with her toys rather than just try to eat them.
And it really wasn't that long ago.
I find I am forever looking for that perfect toy, the one that will hold her interest for more than 5 minutes. And ideally, one that doesn't reside in my kitchen cupboards...or make up drawer...or...

Since turning the BIG "2", I am finding it's getting better and better.
Her favorites this week include:

The Ball

Really, any ball will do, but somehow, she enjoys it more when she actually takes it away from her brother and when it is almost bigger than she is.

Ava's looks a tad different than this one but the concept is the same. This thing is f.u.n. and educational which I love. All of the v-tech toys are so well made. The V-Tech baby range is perfect for this age and really encourages interaction and rewards her for it. And of course, she claps for herself. Don't they all?

The Shopping Cart
I wrote about our love for this $7.49 baby here and it still remains a toy she plays with almost daily.
She does her "laps" running from family room through living/dining and into kitchen about 4,000 times while simultaneously pushing the cart and laughing hysterically. She's quite the multi-tasker already.
She gets that from me.

Dominoes

Yes, she is gifted. I kid. But wow, this little box provides me with at least 30 minutes of uninterrupted peace some days. She will pull every one out of the box, stuff them in her pockets, put them all back and start again.
Crazy fun I tell ya.

The Doll
The Carolle doll to be exact. The sweetest, perfect-sized, best smelling baby doll in the history of baby dolls. These dolls are so well made; don't even get me started on the available accessories. Isabella still has hers and she is just as beautiful all these years later.

What are your little one's playing with these days? Please share!
