Potty Training 101

Remember the secret I shared about potty training? The one where I told you I've never really toilet-trained a child on my own before?
I know, I know. You all thought I was such an expert seeing as I have 3 kids and all.
Not so much.
I worked full-time with my first two and as such, both of them were trained at daycare.
All we had to do was follow those same instructions at home. And follow we did.
Now, with Ava, different story.

At first, she cried and screamed when I would put her on the potty. She would beg for a diaper.
She would pee beside the potty. Or on the floor in front of the toilet.
And then, boom.
She used the potty exclusively. But, there was one little problem.
She had to be naked in order for this to happen.
That's ok, right? Of course it is.
That is, until you want to actually want to leave.the.house
We attempted this on Saturday night when we were invited to a friend's new home for dinner after two long weeks of only short runs here or there.
 By the time we arrived, after what is literally a five minute drive, she had already wet herself.  From there, she was basically naked, peeing herself or just about to pee the entire time.
Sadly, true.
I mean, I can't take her little potty with me can I? Because I would.
She flat out refused to go in their toilet and equally adamantly refused to put on a diaper.
So, naked she was.
This is not Ava and we were not on a beach. She was however, just as naked.
She then proceeded to go up to see the boys and climb into one of the beds.
She enjoys this. Don't judge.
So I did what any mother would do in this situation. I sent my husband up to deal with it.
He came back in what felt like a minute.
"Did you get a diaper on the little monkey?" I asked.
"No. She peed in the bed." He replied. And then mumbled something about how it would be easier to train a puppy.

I have tried underwear. {she thinks they are a diaper and treats them as such}
I have tried videos and books {this one is a favorite}
I have tried bringing the potty seat along. {she wants nothing to do with anyone else's toilet. please see above}
I have bribed her. {yes, of course with chocolate}
The only thing I have yet to try is pull-ups. I feel as though she will just think they are diapers and rip them off as she does with the others. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that part.
Can you say I.have.washed.her.sheets.50.times.this.week?

I am off to pick up some pull ups. A last resort if you will.
Wish me luck.
And say a little prayer to the pee God's would you?
I'm at the e.n.d.

  1. Good Morning Bella!!! LOL ... at least you are still "smiling" right? Know that G's nephew Joshua also has to be naked when going potty - anytime we visit Maria's (J. grandmother) he is 90% naked - he is 3 years old. Take her potty with you ... people will (SHOULD) understand. Maybe auntie C. needs to stop by with some special frilly big girl undies :)

    Good luck my friend...xo C. (HHL)

  2. oh hang in there (not that i have any personal expertise in this matter). i do have twins though and run a daycare so eventually all four of them will need to be trained likely at roughly the same time. so please keep posting your progress so i can learn what works (because something will work eventually)!

  3. Hang in there - it will "click" one of these days (hopefully soon)! I used pull ups for quite a while before potty training (the Target house brand Up and Up training pants worked great and were a lot less $$)! Good luck!

  7. hahahahahahahaha thanks for the laugh!

    ok.on a more serious note. I don't use the word hate much or at all it is a strong word...but I hate potty training. Some days with Jude I seriously wanted to cry.

    Stop stressing and put it on the back burner for a while/ when she is ready she will let you know. It is so frustrating when you know that they can do it.

    Have you tried sticker charts with rewards? you know a sticker every time she uses the toilet and and I dont know 30 stickers = a really great toy?...That didnt work with jude btw...but it was worth a shot!

    p.s your husband is right... I have two 90 lb chocolate labs. they both potty trained in 3 days flat. it is easier to train a puppy lol.

  9. Good luck with the pull ups :). They just might work.

    I don't remember having a hard time with my daughter when it came to potty training. And I didn't really do anything! She just seemed to ease into it.

    Maybe Ava will simply outgrow that phase...

  14. I smile at this remembering our stressful potty training days. You will laugh about this one day! My oldest used to REFUSE to wipe her own butt. She would sit on the toilet and scream Wipe. My. Butt! until someone came to wipe her. In public too. It was so embarrassing, but we crack up about it now!

  15. I feel your pain. Emily trained herself (pretty much). Wet her pants once, didn't like the feeling and so became best friends with her potty. Luke, on the other hand, has absolutely.no.interest.in.potty.training. Zero. Zip. Zilch. He likes to sit on the toilet or potty, fully clothed, reading a book. But will not go pee or poop. He just started at a new preschool. They asked me on Monday if they could start training him at school. I said yes and good luck, dropped off a bunch of extra clothes and underwear and washed my hands of the whole ordeal. Does that make me a bad mother? ;)

  16. We were going to potty train K at 18-19 Months but now I am postponing it until she is ready. I cant imagine the stress of going through that! I heard the 3 day training method and a lot of ppl said it works great! good luck!!!!

  17. Oh how I do not miss those days. When I was trying to potty train my oldest (who is now 22), it was hopeless. One night, we had went to McDonalds when they had the Halloween buckets for the kids meal. Later that night, my daughter was naked & sitting on the bucket. I really wasn't paying any attention to her, but she jumped up and said, "I go potty" and sure enough, she had peed and pooped in the McDonalds Halloween bucket :)

    Stopping by from VoiceBoks!

  18. Funny I'm reading this because I was just thinking of my own dilemma tonight since I ran out of pull ups! Do i run to the store or chance it with BVDs?! My sons is potty trained, but still in pull ups at night... there was a period when I was changing sheets every. Night. So not fun! Good luck with yours! One day it just clicks....when they're ready.

  19. Hang in there, it WILL get better. I don't see any reason why you can't bring a small potty with you when you go to friends' houses. Maybe not the mall but... well, why not? Until she learns that peeing in a toilet is totally safe and nothing ot fear, that potty is her security blanket.

  20. I've been there, but only on the weekends but it was the daycare's problem on weekdays! ;) Sending vibes to the pee pee gods! She is going to get it soon. I know it!
