Saying Goodbye

If you're a follower of this little blog, then you will know that I recently decided to leave my job in favor of a new one ~ that of a full-time wife and mama. This meant a lot of amazing things for my family...it also meant having to let our Donna go.
I have been a mess about it for weeks. Having a nanny is such a personal thing.
They are living in your house
With you and your family day and night.
It is almost like having to ask a family member who has perhaps overstayed their welcome...to move out.

She wanted nothing more than to find a "long-term family". A family that would be an extension of her real one. And she truly felt she had found that in us.
She loved it here. She loved our Ava. Which in the end was all we really hoped for.
She has been nothing but great to our family and I knew this would come as a devastating blow. She was just settling in. Just getting comfortable. Organized. Into a routine.
And now this.
The Zoo - Summer 2011
I sent her a text message asking when she would be home yesterday evening. Telling her we needed to speak to her about something.
She replied adding "I hope I haven't done anything wrong". It made me feel worse. Of course it was nothing she did. It was something I did.
Good for us. Temporarily not so good for her.

We spoke to her the moment she got home. You could cut the tension with a knife. I fiddled around in the kitchen like an idiot. And refused to make direct eye contact. Coward.
She was genuinely shocked.
Saddened.
But so, so happy for me.
A true professional.
I know she will find a good family ~ the one perhaps she was truly meant for.

I will miss her.
So will our Ava girl.

  2. I can't imagine how tormented you were about telling her this. I had to let a nanny go too, but she wasn't full-time or living with us so I think your situation was much more difficult. I'm excited about your new job, though!

  3. How special that Donna was such a wonderful part of your life. I hope that you will still be in contact with her.

I'm happy for you getting to stay home with your sweet kids, though. I know it was so hard for you to go back to work. I hope everything works out according to God's plan for your lives.

  5. Such a beautiful post. I hope Donna finds the right family for her. I know how hard it can be when someone loves your child so much. We had the most amazing nanny and then decided to put our son in daycare for the language development and social skills. It broke my heart to let our nanny go but we see her all the time. She is still like part of the family.

  6. Ohhh, I am so sorry. That must have been so tough. But you're doing what's best for your family - It's nothing to feel guilty about. I hope that wonderful woman finds another home to put all her love into. Hang in there mama! Huggles!

  8. Oh wow, I'm never good at those kind of things. Sounds like it was a tough thing to do. But she seems like a very pleasant and respectful lady. Good for you for quitting your job and doing what you love the most! :)
