A Dog

Truth be told, we are not dog people.
Never have been.
I am however, a cat person. I grew up always having a cat...often times with kittens. We even talked my husband into having a cat for a time. Unfortunately, she had behavioral problems {read: she peed everywhere including on my Pottery Barn carpet} and so, after trying everything, we had no choice but to give her up.
Which brings us to today.

Julian is terrified of dogs.
Like, run away and cry terrified.
But recently, after seeing a few friends with sweet little dogs...he is on some crazy dog-wanting bandwagon!
It is all he talks about. All he barters with.
And last week, he wrote his daddy this letter which was attached to a printed picture of what may be the cutest dog in THE world:

I want to get a dog because I want a pet to play with and train and someone to keep me company while I do my homework and someone to sleep with and someone to take care of and something to walk and something to watch instead of tv.

No, there wasn't any punctuation throughout. I wanted you to get the full effect.
And that last line? PRICELESS.
This kid is good.
Really good.
doesn't that face scream puppy owner?
He has all but persuaded me. And you know I will be the one who will end up taking care of her.
Yes, it will be a girl.
And her name will be Sophie.
I have done some deal-making of my own.

Happy please someone talk us out of this Monday friends.

  1. I seriously don't think you will regret it, I have never lived a day in my life without a pooch and they are definitely called man's best friend for a reason :) What kind are you guys thinking about?

  2. I am such a dog person, but even with all the kids begging, we can't seem to talk my husband into owning one yet. They are a lot of work, but so so fun.:)

  5. I don't know! Dogs are so much work! Just had to put down our 12 year old pup. We loved her dearly, but don't think we're brave enough to do the dog thing again. We travel way too much, and unlike cats can't leave them alone for extended periods.

Is any of this working yet?

  6. I'm on the fence about having a dog as my kids are seriously not old enough/or mature enough to take care of pets on their own as yet.

  7. Susan... wow! talk about coincidences... one of our fur-babies... long time family member just passed away last night. It is amazing how a four legged furry animal can get a hold of your heart... but I will never trade for anything in the world all the joy Lola brought into our lives. Sure we had "moments"... but all in all she completed our family :D It is true you may end up cleaning up after Sophie, but the companionship she will render will make up for it. I say go for it and give her so much love!! With God's Grace, I wish you peace and many blessings (Sophie)... Carla

  8. I´m not a dog (or animal) person for he that matter either. Don´t get me wrong I love animals but elsewhere... not in my house. Specially since like you clearly state, it is us that end up taking care of them...
Guess all of us, with all our opinions will end up driving you crazy... just do as your heart tell you ; )
    Love your blog BTW
Hope you have a great week,
    Lolo

  10. Sorry, can't talk you out of it because I think its a GREAT IDEA! We have a lab and both of our boys adore him. Our four year old is already helping with feeding and letting the dog out, teaching him responsibility. You'll be happy you did it!

  11. Little boys and their dogs are worth every single bit of aggravation (and you'll have some but it won't matter) you will come across. My second oldest loved his dog like no other and it was awesome!

Cute pic., and I love your son's negotiating tactics. ;)

  12. Haha aww, that is so cute! I have two dogs and let me tell you, it is HARD work. I thought I knew how hard it would be, but I really had no clue. But in the end it's so worth it...they bring so much joy to my life :) I'm a new follower!

  15. Dogs are amazing. Ok, I do proclaim my dog to be a giant asshole, but he is really good. Especially with Chunky and kids in general. And when I'm having a rough day and come home, he's always there to cheer me up with a slobbery kiss...I'm talking about the dog...not my husband

  16. My dog Ruby (a 2-year-old chocolate lab ... at her height of "crazy") drives me nuts but at the same time, I just love her. And The Boy loves her, which is exactly the point. A boy should have a dog!

(But yes, know that you WILL be the one doing most of the work!)

  17. Dearest Susan,

That is part of having a family I guess and a good part of it. Too bad that the kitten couldn't stay. She/he must have had some problems that could not be changed... Sad.
But Julian seems to be WANTING his buddy!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  18. Julian (one of my favorite names by the way) is a smart one, isn't he? I think the best part of this is that he's overcoming his fear and I think it's pretty huge that it was his idea. I adore the name Sophie and originally wanted to name my future daughter Sophie (no I'm not preggers), but then so many people have named their dogs Sophie that I've taken that name out of contention. I mean wouldn't it be weird when we meet and you introduce your Sophie to my Sophie? Because one day we're going to meet because obviously we were supposed to be friends.
