What I Wore : Think Pink

It's funny.
The longer I am in South Florida, the color I wear.
Not that I don't normally but my typical uniform of black, white + grey just seems out of place here.
And in this pink?
Feeling very floridian
sunglasses - c/o Chicnova | blouse - The Gap | necklace - Forever XXI | shorts - Aritzia | sandals - Alfani
My husband and my oldest finally arrive tomorrow.
Can't wait!

About A Boy

I "met" Michelle through this blog.
She reached out to me some time ago and we've been fast friends ever since.
It's funny how you can feel that you know someone that you've never met in person.
But I feel like that.
She is good people.
And I asked her to share her incredible story with me. With you.

Haden was born a perfect baby boy on Dec 12th, 2003. The first 9 months were heaven. I remember all of his milestones, took pictures, wrote everything down. At 9 months he is putting words together. With his little fingers waving he would say "bye bye mommy".

Those would be some of the last words that Haden would ever speak to me.
sweet Haden {look at those eyes!}
Going into his 10th month we decided to take our first family trip . Florida was too far a drive so we decided on Tennessee. I brought Haden to the doctor to make sure all of his vaccines were up to date. He needed his DPT shot, so like a good mom he got it. It was this that changed our life forever.
While in Tennessee, Haden fell asleep in the car; when he awoke he said "hello sleepyheads!" but
he didn't look at me??
Then, his eyes rolled up into his head and his arms and legs starting shaking. I had never seen a seizure before and thought Haden was having a heart attack. I got him out of the car seat and was screaming at my husband Jamie to stop the car because something was wrong.  I didn't know what to do so I jumped out of the car and ran with him in my arms down the road...looking or someone to help me.  Luckily, a lady stopped at a stop sign saw me and quickly got out of her car and ran towards us.  She grabbed me and looked at Haden and told me he was having seizure.
She directed us to the nearest hospital.

Haden's seizure stopped and we were in the hospital searching for answers.  Why did Haden have 104 degree fever.  What made him so sick? When we left Canada he was healthy?  Where did he get the sickness in August? He didn't go to daycare. Wasn't around any other sick kids?

The doctors didn't have any answers for us.  They did a spinal tap to make sure he didn't have meningitis . They gave him Advil. Tylenol. Antibiotics.
He was one sick little boy.

The drive home was the longest car ride I have EVER been on.

Finally back home.
More seizures.  Not sleeping anymore. Not babbling anymore.
I wasn't hearing his voice anymore.
Sono's, EEG's, strobe light testing, blood work, genetic testing, food allergy testing..you name it he was tested.
He was assigned a neurologist.
His diagnoses was epilepsy and he prescribed phenobarbital . First drug my sweet boy ever got into his system.  What a nightmare.
He totally changed from a little baby that slept the night to a baby who could not settle himself.
We tried everything!  Rocking, car rides, swings, wrapping him up in blankets, sleeping on the floor with him NOTHING worked.  The only way I can describe Haden trying to fall asleep was like watching someone who's skin was on fire!
I cried so much because I felt like I wasn't doing my part as a mom. I wasn't helping him, I prayed so many times to God to please help him sleep.
After almost a year of this torture we switched doctors and meds.  Finally, a new drug, clobazam.
It was an answer. For 3 years Haden went seizure free.

Things settled down and he started to get some language back. But he wasn't doing the things that little boys do.  Instead of playing cars or trucks he started to spin balls on the floor.

I thought, wow, that's pretty cool.  He could spin several of them at the same time.
He also wasn't too interested in other children or even talking or looking at me anymore. So many times I would hold his face and say "look at me Haden!",  It was almost like it pained him to do so.
More appointments. More specialists.
And in my gut, I knew.

Well, Mr. and Mrs. Scott your son has autism.

There it was.
The A word finally out on the table.
My heart sank and stomach had a huge knot in it.  To this day that knot in my stomach has never left...truth.

Coming home Jamie and I didn't say one word to each other.  It was a fog really and I don't quite honestly remember much. All that I knew was I had to find a way to help him....fast.
I read stuff on diet, supplements, really crazy treatments, HBOT, swimming with dolphins, riding horses in Nepal, stem cell treatments in Costa Rica.
It was a world that was so foreign.
During this time I was really struggling emotionally , I cried so much, I prayed at the foot of Haden's crib nightly.
I would ask God to please give me a little of him back ,
Please don't take everything from us.
Please help him God.  Help our little boy.

It's hard to write this, very hard. I told Susan that it would get to a point that I would have to relive moments and that time in my life was not a happy one. We were both sad and grieving.
You see, you grieve the child you thought your were going to have, or grieve the life that you thought you were going to have.
I never signed up for seizures, tests, oodles of doctors, specialists, drugs.
Michelle {isn't she gorgeous?!} // Michelle + her husband, Jamie
Other moms I knew were having children and I just didn't fit in with them.
They would talk of things their kids were doing and Haden wasn't?? I had a hard time with everyone, because I had so much anger.
I had so many really stupid comments said to me by "well meaning" moms.
Have you tried this?
Have you done that?
What did you eat when pregnant?
Or my personal favorite, "you know I wouldn't care if a had a baby with special needs, but it would be downs that I would pick"
Can you imagine picking your disability...why not autism?
Got a thing against autism?

TO BE CONTINUED.
one of Michelle's favorite photos of Haden
Thank you Michelle for sharing part 1 of your incredible journey with us here today!
I know each and every mama reading this shares your pain and is in awe of your strength.
Love you beautiful girl.

Friday Fancies : Style Crush

I am contemplating a pair of leather shorts that can easily transition into the fall.
While the length on Ms. Palermo's are far too short for me; I love the look of an airy sweater layered over them.
The bag adds just the right amount of interest.

Style Crush

1. While this sweater doesn't share the same high low hemline (which I love) it gives a similar feeling of ease. All about the 3/4 sleeve but not a huge fan of the v-neck. I might layer a round neck tank underneath it.

2. These Helmut Lang leather shorts are perfection. I love the length, love the drawstring and the washed leather looks so soft and fluid.
The drawstring adds a casual feel and I can easily see these with an opaque tight worn well into the fall. {less expensive options (+ non leather) here + here}

3. Crochet/straw bag. The leather straps on this {on a 50% sale + only left in bright pink} one make it less casual.

4. Leopard print pumps. Because they go with everything. The new neutral? I think so.

5. These tortoise shell sunglasses are a wonderfully flattering shape; I just love the thicker, more substantial frame. And the price is definitely right.

6. A bold link bracelet via Asos brings a nice pop of gold to this otherwise fairly neutral outfit.
Are you on the gold bandwagon yet? I find I'm buying less and less silver toned jewelry.

6. A smaller watch. Different for me as I am all about a large, almost manly style face.
I love the tortoise accents on this one by Fossil.

Happy Friday!

These photos were quickly snapped by my son during a walk in CityPlace this past weekend.
I'm all about a perfect white tank in the summertime + have learned to always carry a pashmina if we plan on stopping indoors.
Not sure why restaurants and shops insist on keeping it near freezing.

tank - The Gap {on sale!}
necklace -  "Chel
sea" by Stella + Dot
pashmina - H + M
maxi skirt - Design History {sold out // similar here from Top Shop}

May or May Not

One of my favorite bloggy friends often posts these {see here + here} and I've always thought they were great.
I call this one the "we just arrived in South Florida edition" or "we don't get out much".

I may or may not have been coached repeatedly on how to say "pink frosted sprinkled donut" while in line at the Dunkin' Donuts drive-thru on day one. You know, because if you say "pink frosted SPRINKLE donut" by accident, they will only put A SINGLE sprinkle on it.
This may or may not make perfect sense to an eleven year old boy who may or may not be my son.
It may or may not have rained every.single.day since we arrived. It also may or may not be 40 degrees in Toronto but I digress.

I may or may not have tried Dr. Pepper for the very first time. Also on the recommendation of the girl who inspired this post.
Yes, of course we're addicted.

I may or may not have had THE biggest bug in the world in my hair while I was driving home from the mall the other day. Ava may have told me about it from the backseat. And Julian may have refused to get it out even when I was thrashing around like a crazy woman.
It may or may not have been red. And had wings.
And once we got rid of it, we may or may not have rolled over it with our car. Twice.

I may or may not be unable to stop shopping for Ava.
OK, I can't.

We may or may not have driven almost 10 miles with a lizard on our car window. Other drivers may or may not have been pointing at us and laughing.
And then, it may or may not have flew off on the highway after not being able to hang on anymore.

I may or may not see a trend with things of the creepy crawly variety happening.
Anything you may or may not be up to on this Monday?

Friday Fancies : Summer Sale

Since arriving in South Florida, I find myself on the internet more than usual just browsing. Can I just say that I'm not sure I could control myself if I actually lived here?
The on-line shopping experience + the crazy amount of choice is just too much.
Add to that free shipping on just about anything and it's a wonder anyone ever leaves the house.

Summer Sale

1. J Crew seahorse vintage T. $29.99 {and an extra 30% right now} Adorable with denim cut-offs or an airy maxi.

2. I may or may not have already ordered a few things from All Saints. It is one of my favorite stores and some of the deals were just too good to pass up. If I had even a single wedding this summer, I would definitely pick up this lovely. At $99 it is a steal.

3. I am, shall we say, a collector of clutches. I would love to add this one by Tory Burch to my collection. The preppy colors are perfect with denim and at $136.50 {less 20% right now} it would come in at somewhere around $100.

4. I'm a big fan of Michael Kors shoes. And these, at $74 (!) from $165 definitely fit the bill. And would look all kinds of amazing with say, the dress from All Saints at the wedding that I don't have this summer.

5. Madewell. What can I say? All sale is an ADDITIONAL 40% right now. It is difficult to restrain oneself. I love this sweater. I am buying this sweater + you should too. Ready for this? It is $45.99 less 40% and free shipping = $28.00 {regularly $68.00}

6. Henri Bendel jewels. I often go into the store just to drool for a little bit. A tad pricey for costume but now, at 50% off select pieces...hmmm. I love this Spence 5 wrap bracelet + it comes in every color under the rainbow. Originally $88, now $44.

7. And last, but certainly not least, Anthropologie. I love their swimwear because of it's retro feel and have been on the hunt for the perfect one piece floral suit. How gorgeous is this one? $59.95 {originally $223} Yes please.

So, do you plan on taking advantage of some of the amazing sales going on right now?
Happy Friday!

Southbound

source
Depending on when you're reading this, I may or may not be in a plane, en route to South Florida, panicking just a little bit.
Eyeing the stewardesses to make sure they don't look panicked.
Listening intently to any and every little noise.
And probably trying to keep busy so that I don't think about where I am.
OR the fact that I can't get out.
You see, there I go making myself panic again.

Can the beach be far away?

What I Wore : A Little Bohemian

This week's post was inspired by this one.
Alison and I have a lot in common.
We're both mama's to 3. Heck, we even both have an Ava.
She too worked in the corporate telecommunications world for years, and like me, is now a stay at home mama.
She's keeping it real and today, so am I.
A typical run around never stop feel like a chauffeur some most some days outfit.
Sunglasses - Michael Kors
Earrings - Forever XXI {old}
Dress - Angie {pattern no longer available, love this one}
Vest - Old Navy

Watch - Michael Kors
Sandals - Tory Burch
And in the spirit of really keeping it real...
the hair is wash, sleep and wear. Obviously.
All photos were taken by my 11 year old son.
Who first asked me if I needed to get changed.
Nice.
